I think a lot about the people who read this blog. Do you have bipolar? Are you looking for help for someone who does? Are you suicidal? Did you just get out of the hospital or do something when you were manic that your feel really ashamed about now? I’ve been able to answer yes to all of the above many times in my life. I want to remind people that is does get better. It just takes longer for some of us.

I think a lot about the people who read this blog
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007Focus on Facts- not FEELINGS!
Sunday, November 25th, 2007Many people are encouraged to get in touch with their feelings and let go and experience life! I think that’s great- for most people. But there are those of us who can’t trust our feelings at all. For example, a friend and I went to karaoke the other night when I was really depressed – When her other friends came in, I felt she was ignoring me. My mind started to foresee the end of our relationship! It said, “How can she do this to me! What kind of friend is she! I am just going to leave without even saying goodbye! That will show her!” Oh, what on earth was I thinking? I wasn’t thinking- I was just in all bipolar emotion mode and had no command of the facts. I know that my feelings when I’m sick are manufactured from an ill brain- and these were definitely manufactured feelings. Understanding this has completely saved my relationships.
As I sat there, with my feet up in the chair in front of me and my arms crossed over my chest like a petulant child- I looked at her back and just felt so left out and hurt. Then I got my perspective and said to myself, “Julie, this person has been a loyal, loving and kind friend to you for years. She is always there for you. She loves you. And the one night in the past few years that you go out and she pays attention to someone else- you freak out. You’re depressed tonight. You’re lonely. If she had this behavior on another night, you would simply go over there and sit with her instead of rolling in your miserable feelings over here. Now snap out of it! You promised yourself, you will never, ever take out your bipolar disorder emotions on a friend. If you have trouble with her behavior outside of bipolar, look at the facts and how you really feel and go from there. But if this is just because you’re depressed- then it’s up to you to treat her with the respect she deserves.”
I put my feet down, uncrossed my arms, walked the one foot to her chair, put my hand on her shoulder and sat down. She was happy to see me.

Beware of the Depression Decisions
Saturday, November 17th, 2007Depression stinks. It takes away my ability to think rationally and I hate it. That is putting it mildly. I’ve found that there are certain things I simply can’t let myself do when I’m depressed:
- Eat junk food to feel better (some people have to watch caffeine)
- Make big decisions such as canceling a project or telling someone I can’t see them anymore
- Keep seeing people who make me depressed!
I also have to watch my driving as my reflexes are off.
As you can tell, the depression has me today. I woke up crying. It’s from a combination of things- trying to work more, relationships, a friend’s illness, eating poorly! Many would say, well no wonder you’re depressed- but as those of us with bipolar disorder know, this depression goes beyond the normal reaction to outside events. This is physical and often out of my control.
But! I can still get on with my day. I’m here to meet my business partner and I teach a writing class tonight. I can act as if all is well until it is. It always works.

The Difference Between Bipolar 1(one) and Bipolar II (two)
Friday, November 16th, 2007Bipolar disorder is an illness that affects a person’s ability to regulate their own moods.
There are two types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar 1(one) and Bipolar II (two). People with bipolar I experience full blown mania while people with bipolar II have a milder form of mania called hypomania. This is the main difference between the two types of bipolar disorder. All people with bipolar disorder have similar depression symptoms, though people with bipolar II tend to spend more time in depression. Both types of the illness can have a complication called rapid cycling. This is where a person has more than four mood swing a year. I have to laugh at this one sometimes as I have such severe rapid cycling, I can have four mood swings in a few hours! It’s very important that you know if you have bipolar I or II and if you have rapid cycling. Your diagnosis strongly affects treatment choices.
No matter what type of bipolar disorder you have, it’s a serious illness that has to be treated with a comprehensive plan.

Microdosing Bipolar Disorder Medications
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007Talk with Your Doctor about Microdosing!
A friend of mine just started a new anti psychotic. Within the first day she was so drugged out she couldn’t focus enough to work. I could tell she was very upset when we talked. She had high hopes for this drug. I told her to call her doctor immediately and say she needs to microdose.
Microdosing means starting with a smaller than normal dosage so that the body can get used to side effects. She wants this drug to work, but if she stays on this dose- she will probably have to quit the drug in order to function.
We all need to be on top of our med side effects- or we will quit the meds too soon and get even more ill. I went through this for years. When I finally found a drug that had the potential to change my life- Lamictal- I knew that because of my terrible medication experiences in the past, I would have to start really slowly to let my body acclimate. It took six months and it worked. I am actually on a much, much higher dose than is regularly recommended and yet my body finally adjusted.
What about you? Are you on a med that may work and yet can’t handle the side effects? If so, talk with your doctor and tell her or him what you need.
