My husband is bi-polar and gets extremely iritated at our kids for not picking up things and doing chores. He yells at them and then threatens divorce. Would this be a sign of dysphoric mania?

I suddenly am unable to control the sexual drive towards another man who is happy to soothe me. I am a happily married woman. I seem to get caught up in the moment and I don't know how to stop. I don't seem to want to stop. He comforts me and brings sanity to an otherwise insane world. I know it would break my spouses heart and that he would leave me it he knew. I have to say I wouldn't blame him. I know there is no future with this man, just comfort. Help.

Hi Julie, Your book 'Loving someone with Bipolar' has helped me some. Obviously I will never be able to fully understand what goes on in a Bipolar mind. My husband is Bipolar, diagnosed 3 yrs ago and married 12 yrs, and he is currently having a mania swing. It's been going on for about 6 weeks now and is destroying the family. He has made a connection with another female (though I don't think it's been physical) and he can't understand how hurt I am. It's like he tells me he wants things back the way they were and doesn't know how to get back. Then he will tell 'the other woman' that he's going to leave me and have a life with her (and that he loves her). I feel on the brink of divorce. I don't understand how the Bipolar makes a mind do and say things it doesn't really mean. We just started therapy a week ago so nothing has come of it yet. He is also taking generic Lamictal. Would the generic version possibly have anything to do with triggering this mania? In 12 years together, he has never had an episode like this. I want it to end, or else I feel our marriage is over. I can't live with someone who cheats on their spouse. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm losing my mind and life all at once!

Thank you for understanding that even hypomania isn't all fun! I picked up a book - and put it down as if it were on fire - that was all about making those manic days even more productive. Puh-lease! How can anyone write something like that? Mania and hypomania need controls, just like depression. It can be downright SCARY to recognize the symptoms but feel "driven" to continue the behavior, nonetheless. I spent one Easter break quilting night and day, exhausting myself but driven to continue. Not pleasant at all.
