Try a world and local news media fast!

I love sports radio- as many of you know. I stopped listening to and reading all local and world news about six months ago and moved into sports.

Sports radio is a lot of fun and man on man do those guys gossip! They gossip more than any tabloid magazine. I find it very funny and relaxing. Sports are big business and there are a lot of negative behaviors, lying, cheating, backstabbing, trash talking and throwing too many interceptions – especially if you are my favorite player- Jay Cutler!

And yet, it’s all done in a rather positive way with a lot of laughter and playfulness.  Even the recent story of Tiger Woods and his ‘transgretions’ was handled differently in the sports radio world than in the tabloids.  It’s refreshing.

What is my point in all of this?  When I watched the news, listened to NPR (National Public Radio) all day and read the Internet and even the newspaper headlines, I became upset. The stories rarely changed and there was so much murder, abuse and war that it simply overwhelmed me- especially when I was depressed.  About four months after my media fast, I missed listening to NPR so I turned it on. The stories were exactly the same as when I stopped listening. In fact, they were the same stories from last year and the year before.

So I 100% stopped.  Interestingly, there is little that goes on that I don’t hear about through a glace at the Yahoo home page or through my very politically savvy friends. If I want to know, I can ask.

This has changed my life.  I now have a truly enjoyable entertainment outlet in sports radio- I can even listen to it before I go to bed.

If you have a lot of depression, anxiety, money worries or just plain old stress, consider a media fast of at least a month. You may find it will turn into a lot more!

And if you’re a sports lover and want to have a  few hours with a lot of  well known guests and a lot of great laughs, visit www.danpatrick.com

I do have to say sports is not all fun and games- especially when your favorite player leads the league in interceptions!
